10 STEPS TO EASY TOOTH BRUSHING

First the Outsides.

  1. Put your front teeth edge to edge.
  2. Place your toothbrush on to your front teeth and move vigorously up and down. But don't press too hard. Let the brush do the work!
      • Tip - use a mirror to start with. Tip - lock your wrist so that all movement is coming from your elbow only.
      • Tip - bounce off your top and bottom lip as you brush to ensure you brush over the gum margins.
      • Tip - 10 up and down movements in one place before repositioning.
      • Tip - Check that your toothbrush is actually moving straight up and down.
      • You should now be brushing from pre-molar to pre-molar (the teeth in front of the first big tooth - the molar).
  3. To brush the back teeth - lowers first - place the toothbrush 45 degrees into the gum margin and agitate vigorously ( not too hard ), using small circular movements so that the bristles don't actually move out of position off the tooth.
      • Tip - 10 circular movements before repositioning.
  4. To brush the uppers - use the same action.
      • Tip - Move your lower jaw to the side you are brushing - this will move the jaw bone away from the upper teeth at the back so that you can get easier access.
  5. Finish by scrubbing the back surfaces of the last teeth.

Now the Inside

  1. To brush the inside start by holding the toothbrush vertically, bristles down. Place on the inside of the front lower teeth and simply move up and down making sure you are brushing over the gums.
  2. Move round to the back teeth ensuring that the brush remains almost vertical.
      • Tip - to ensure that your have the correct alignment look in the mirror - the brush should be at right angles to the part of the arch you are brushing.
  3. Turn the brush bristles up and repeat for the uppers.
  4. Don't forget the back surfaces of the last teeth- scrub well.
  5. Finish by scrubbing the surfaces of all the back teeth - including premolars.

Practice once a day for 10 minutes each day, preferably when you have the time - not first thing in the morning. AND always use a firm grip!
