How porcelain veneers changed my life - overnight. As a dentist, I was astonished at the effect it had on people when I had my own porcelain veneers fitted 15 years ago. I couldn’t stop smiling and as a result my confidence soared. I just wish I’d had it done even sooner. And now I spend most of my time doing the same for others.

Whenever you see a Hollywood star on the big screen you can guarantee it’s probably the result of some serious porcelain veneer or crown work. And as a result of advances in dental techniques over the past 20 years you too can have porcelain veneers at a fraction of that Hollywood price.

Only £375/veneer – why pay more!

So what are porcelain veneers? Porcelain veneers are very thin coverings made of what else – porcelain. Imagine false fingernails - which are glued or bonded to the surface of a tooth. Veneers make a tooth look like new and can also be used to straighten teeth, avoiding the necessity for expensive orthodontic treatment, such as braces. The placement of porcelain veneers is even referred to as immediate orthodontics.

To assess what you would look like with porcelain veneers we like to perform what cosmetic dentists call a mock-up first. This is when veneers made up of a composite filling material are temporarily affixed to the front surfaces of the teeth. These temporary veneers can then be adjusted to give you a good idea of what your smile could look like. I believe this is a far better way of establishing what needs to be done than conventional laboratory wax-ups. The relation of the teeth to the lips as they move can be observed so that the porcelain veneers we make will produce the right and perfect smile for you. Don’t forget everybody’s mouth is different. What suits one person may not necessarily suit you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and two sets of eyes are better than one. It is important to work through the process together.

Porcelain veneers can be used to alleviate the following symptoms: stained teeth, broken or chipped teeth, crooked teeth and teeth with gaps.

The front surfaces of the teeth may need to be filed down slightly to make room for the veneers so that the new teeth, when covered, do not protrude too much. We can also can provide micro-thin porcelain veneers which require no tooth preparation whatsoever. If cosmetic considerations require temporary veneers in the meantime this can be easily done.

The procedure involves two appointments - the first, at which we file the surfaces of the teeth, if necessary, and take an impression for the porcelain veneer laboratory, and the second, two weeks later at which time we bond the veneers to the teeth.

Proviso: Porcelain veneers are very durable but are prone to damage just as normal teeth are. And because veneers are glued or bonded to the front of the teeth it is advisable to avoid really crunchy foods.
